JANUARY FEATURED ARTIST EXHIBIT: HOUSE OF SPIRIT AND SHADOW - FEATURING THE ART OF FRANK BARRERA

The Featured Artist Exhibit, for January 2018, will display the artwork of local artist, Frank Barrera. The show will run from January 6th through January 24th.  The Arts Center Gallery is open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, Wednesday through Saturday.

Houses of spirit and shadow - Frank Barrera

The inspiration for my art comes from my childhood and the fairytale books I write in my other life as a children's author.  The shadow boxes reflect scenes and memories from my childhood.  The fairy temples are taken directly from my stories and from the Spirt House traditions of Southeast Asia.

Barrera1show5.jpg
Barrera2show7.jpg

"A spirit house or 'house of the spirit of the land', is a shrine to the protective spirit of a place that is found in the Southeast Asian countries of Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand.    Most homes and business have a spirit house placed in an auspicious spot.  The house is intended to provide a shelter for spirits that could cause problems for the people if not appeased.".

Barrera9show4.jpg

I have chosen this style of model-making to interpret the fairy temples and houses build by the little people in my children's book, "Tales of the Blue Wizard".  Each of the three tribes of fairies has their own unique style of building.  I on the other hand, use whatever I can find in my garage and in junk yards.  All of this is an attempt to appease the little people into staying and living among us, blessing us with their magic and granting our wishes.

May you always have magic in your lives.

SEPTEMBER FEATURED ARTIST EXHIBIT: Project Eve - The Art of Aaron Lee. Also Featuring Local Authors F.M. Barrera, Nan Mahon, Gregg Matson, Kathy Lynne Marshall, and Shirley Parenteau

The Featured Artist Exhibit for, September 2017, will display the artwork of local artist, Aaron Lee.

Aaron Lee paints on canvas with oil paint, and explores the diverse textures and techniques created by adding acrylic and spray paint.  He also enjoys working in sculpture, jewelry making, product design and printmaking.  He says, “I believe in the power of creativity and the power that fine art has to provide healing and inspiration for the viewer .”  With that in mind, his dream  is to open a youth center and teach young people how to be creative in the areas of art, music, and mental health.

We will also be featuring Local Authors F.M. Barrera, Nan Mahon, Kathy Lynne Marshal, Gregg Matson, and Shirley Parenteau.  F.M.'s fantasy/fairy tale - QUEST OF THE HACHAMI, LOST RELICS OF ATLANTIS, Nan's mystery - BLIND BUDDY AND MOJO'S BLUES BAND, Kathy's family biography - THE ANCESTORS ARE SMILING, Gregg's collection of non-fiction essays - LIVING IN 1984:  AMERICA'S FLIRTATION WITH FASCISM, and Shirley's children's book - BEARS IN SNOW, will all be in sale at the gallery for the month of September. The Featured Authors will also be giving readings from their books, the night of the reception.

FrankieBOOK5COVER2.jpg

F.M. Barrera’s QUEST OF THE HACHAMI, LOST RELICS OF ATLANTIS is the latest book in his young adult fairy tale / fantasy series TALES OF THE BLUE WIZARD.   It centers on the third tribe of fairies created by Jamomere the Blue Wizard. In their journey to find their lost master and locate a permanent home, the Hachami People encounter ancient civilizations along the way which they knowingly and unknowingly influence. History is changed in ways we never even knew. Such personalities as Prince Siddhartha and the first Emperor of China are encountered along their journeying and popular legends and myths of the world are revisited and reinvented.

Nan Mahon has written three novels.  The  characters in Nan Mahon’s mystery BLIND BUDDY AND MOJO’S BLUES BAND are the less-conventional people, who by design or fate, live in a dangerous and edgy world. The conflicts they face rise from this fringe and often shady environment. They are the different, the talented, and the disenfranchised. Nan draws her characters from the people she has met in her work as a journalist, free-lance writer, band agent and music promoter.

Kathy Lynne Marshall’s family biography THE ANCESTORS ARE SMILING is filled with interesting and unusual creative nonfiction stories voiced by her family members.  For example, can you believe her great aunt was profiled on the Jay Leno TV show and in Essence Magazine when she was 106 years of age?  Some of her relatives lead hardscrabble lives as domestics and cooks, but some were educators, engineers, and medical professionals. All lived successful lives in racially-charged America, and their tenacity drove them to ensure each generation was better off than the last.

gregg.jpg

Gregg Ward Matson's  LIVING IN 1984 - AMERICA'S FLIRTATION WITH FASCISM is a series of observational essays about history and current events, linking past with present, in an effort to avoid a disastrous future.  He uses quotes from Orwell and other influential writers as resources to gain knowledge and rationality, which are the best weapons against encroaching authoritarianism.  Published in 2014, this book might seem too optimistic, in light of current events.  However, the connection between historical events  described, current overall reality, and the solutions for a more hopeful future remain accurate.

Shirley Parenteau's BEARS IN SNOW is the sixth in her series of children’s picture books and is her first with embossed foil on the cover. Shirley  made her first trip to Japan this year, traveling solo to research a new children’s novel and see as much as she could of that beautiful country. She also enjoyed a meeting with the publisher and staff who buy Japanese translation rights to her children’s novels and picture books.  BEARS IN THE SNOW will be republished by Candlewick as a toddler board book in October. A seventh in the picture book series, BEARS AND BLOSSOMS will be published by Candlewick Press and by Iwasaki Shoten next spring.

The show will run from September 2nd through September 27th. The Arts Center Gallery is open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, Wednesdays through Saturdays, and Sundays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Exhibit: GARDEN RHYTHMS - The Art of Michelle Vershaw. Also Featuring Local Authors - Elaine Faber, Shirley Parenteau and Gregg Ward Matson

Exhibit: GARDEN RHYTHMS - The Art of Michelle Vershaw. Also Featuring Local Authors - Elaine Faber, Shirley Parenteau and Gregg Ward Matson

This month's exhibit will feature the artwork of Local Painter and Art Teacher, Michelle Vershaw.   Michelle is comfortable with a wide variety of media including pastel, watercolor, gauche, acrylic and oil. People provide a wealth of fascinating material for her work. She enjoys capturing a mood through portraiture, or conveying the dynamics of a group gathering. The narrative quality of her paintings has one looking deeply, investigating all the details to understand the story behind the paintings so well.  Michelle's scenes often also depict a delightful interplay of sun and shadows,, adding additional complexity to the scene.  She often begins with a sketch, finding a starting point and working outward tentatively, feeling her way around the composition, playing with color, value and movement.

We will also be featuring Local Authors Elaine Faber, Shirley Parenteau and Gregg Ward Matson. Elaine's newest mystery, MRS. ODBODDY - HOMETOWN     PATRIOT, Shirley's children's book, DOLLS OF HOPE and Gregg's Detective Novel, HEALTHY, WEALTHY, AND DEAD, will be on sale at the gallery for the month of October.

Elaine Faber's MRS. ODBODDY - HOMETOWN PATRIOT is her fourth published novel, preceded by three cozy cat mysteries, BLACK CAT'S LEGACY, BLACK CAT AND THE LETHAL LAWYER, and BLACK CAT AND THE ACCIDENTAL ANGEL.  In these books, the black cat Thumper, with the aid of his ancestor's memories helps solve mysteries and crimes.  HOMETOWN PATRIOT is the first of three Mrs. Odboddy adventures.  It takes place during WWII, when all US citizens were encouraged to be hometown patriots by planting a Victory Gardern or collecting paper and cans.  Elderly Mrs. Odboddy takes it a step further. Attempting to expose a Nazi spy, she discovers a black market conspiracy to steal a ration book.

Shirley Parenteau's inspiration for DOLLS OF HOPE came from discovering an amazing on-line link to the Friendship Dolls of 1926, when children in this country sent nearly 13,000 dolls to children in Japan. Japanese children sent back 58 three-meter high dolls of gratitude.  She first told this story in the book, SHIP OF DOLLS.  Her second book in the series, DOLLS OF HOPE, is a Junior Library Guild selection and tells the story of a Japanese girl trying to save an American doll sent to her school. A third book, DOLLS OF WAR, set in the U.S. during World War II will be published in 2017, and she hopes to complete the series with DOLLS OF SECRET, about the 300 American and 47 Japanese dolls known to have survived.

Gregg Ward Matson's HEALTHY, WEALTHY, AND DEAD is his second published book, preceded by his non-fiction political treatise, LIVING IN 1984 - AMERICA'S FLIRTATION WITH FASCISM.  The premier book signing and reading for this first book, was also held at the Elk Grove Fine Arts Center. The idea for HEALTHY, WEALTHY, AND DEAD originally came to Gregg around 1998, when he started wondering about how a detective with A.D.D would ply his trade.  Over the years this idea has evolved into a gripping tale, in which detective Marvin Kent, finds that his A.D.D. can be useful in allowing him to focus on details of a crime that other people miss.  The novel takes place in Sacramento, California, where the streets are still mean, although Marvin avoids violence whenever he can.

This show will continue through October 26th
