Featured Instructor - Debra Williams
Education: BA degree in painting and drawing from CSU Fullerton and a single subject art teaching credential from UC Davis.
The subject matter for my art often stems from my lifelong passion for the natural world. This passion was passed on to me from my mother, a cartoonist, who was curious about everything around her. She taught me to see the beauty in a simple blossom.
The medium I am teaching is scratchboard. Scratchboard is an old engraving technique used by illustrators since the 1800s. Today scratchboard is accepted as fine art and is seen in museums and galleries around the world.
The challenge with this medium is working in a subtractive method on a black background and scratching the surface with just the right pressure to reveal the highlights and values that create the different forms in the composition. Hatching, cross hatching and stippling add texture, value and interest to the work. The detail one can achieve with scratchboard is incredible.
