Small Treasures: "Cloud Pictures" by Jolene Matson

My Small Treasures this year are entitled "Cloud Pictures."  Looking at clouds one often notices shapes that seem to resolve into recognizable images.  I love looking at clouds, especially at sunrise and sunset and have photographed many beautiful formations for use in my art.  Since I also love to depict horses in my art I decided to combine the two interests in this themed series.

After rolling out my clay, and cutting it into 5" x 7" rectangles, I drew the images I wanted on the clay, cut around the edges, and began to carve the clay to create the swirls of clouds...

Next, I used a brush and water to smooth and soften the edges of the sculpture...
When I finished the sculpture process, I added underglaze colors to add depth and color to the clouds....

My pieces were then fired in the kiln...

Next, I prepared the wood panels by painting them with gesso...three coats of white to level the wood, and serve as an underlayment for the acrylic color to follow....

Then, I added acrylic paint  for the blue sky background...

Next, came the cloud's silver linings...silver beads....

The final result....
